Few people know Air Force Village better than Major General M. Gary Alkire. He has served on the AFV Board of Directors since 1992 and was Chairman for five years. For the past three years, as AFV President and CEO, he has very capably led AFV through an extensive redevelopment project that has greatly enhanced campus life, added stylish new residences, improved amenities and prepared Air Force Village for a solid and successful future.
Now he plans to rest from his labors and in January he will take on a new role at the Village: that of resident.
Maj Gen Alkire has firsthand experience and knowledge of AFV from the board and staff side ... and he knows that Air Force Village has set the highest standards for developing and maintaining continuing care retirement communities worldwide. He and his lovely wife, Ellen, are convinced this is the place they want to be, surrounded by people they respect and enjoy.
With the announcement of his retirement as President/CEO, he looks forward to leading a more leisurely lifestyle in the spacious new Ranch Home that he and Ellen will move to in February. "We're going to retire and have fun and let someone else run the place," he says.
Over the years, Maj Gen Alkire says he and his wife have observed older couples they know who seem lonely and isolated. "At Air Force Village, you're around people all the time and they watch out for each other, care for each other. To be in a positive, stimulating environment with friends, interesting activities and nutritious meals adds quality years to your life," he says.
Besides, he says, it is reassuring to their five children to know that he and his wife will be in a place where they are happy, secure and comfortable, and where a continuum of health care options are available to them should they be needed.
The Air Force Village family is deeply grateful to Maj Gen Alkire for his many years of excellent service, wise leadership and thoughtful vision ... and we say, welcome to the Alkires, our newest AFV residents. Perhaps someday they'll be your neighbors.
